Lift Someone Up, Especially If It Is Yourself!!!

There is a phenomenon in the United States that really bugs me when it comes to our issues with body image. We tend to forget there is no perfect form - thin, fat or somewhere in between, all of these shapes hold a beautiful human being inside.

My shape has ranged all along the scale of fat to thin. I sit now at a weight that the medical community deems obese - yet my community of friends, family, and coworkers deems fit. I have been called many things throughout my life - skinny minney, boney butt, beached whale, tub o' lard, and even squealed at like a pig.

When I was heavy people made fun of me. The worst was walking by high school boys and having them say, "hear piggy, piggy" and then squeal at me mimicking a pig. Oh and the time I went into Victoria Secrets to purchase a gift card for a friends wedding and while I was looking around the sales lady said, "umm I don't think we carry anything that fits you here." The other sales people smirked at me, one even giggled.

When I was thin people made fun of me. The worst was when a very close friend of mine pointed at the fact my ribs were now visible above my chest and stated, "that looks gross, you should eat something, your ribs shouldn't show like that." Another time I had the right of way and was walking across the street when a car with two obese women pulled up and yelled, "get out of the fucking street stupid skinny bitch, thin doesn't get you privileges it just makes it easier to run you over!" They laughed heartily and zoomed off.

I watch this ugly monster of hatred in regards to ALL shapes and sizes run rampant on social media sites as well. Mostly women, but some men too, search for, create, and readily come across images, quotes, and articles to share that support the size and shape they are. Sometimes in doing so they end up alienating others with posts that are filled with hurtful comments against those who are not that shape and size.

Most of the time these images and quotes attack thin women with sayings like, "real men prefer meat not bones" or "curvy is beautiful who wants a stick?" Even going so far as to take images of beautifully fit women, who have obviously worked their butts off to get into such great shape, and saying things like, "bitch needs a sandwich" and "this man is doing really bad in drag."

We get so wrapped up in wanting to be okay with our bodies, compounded by the fact we just simple are not okay with them, that we end up searching for some kind of recognition outside of us that our size really is okay. Online we find this validation of our size and shape in a image, quote, or article that alleviates some of the negativity we thrust upon ourself. In doing so, I think we forget, or perhaps we truly are completely unaware, that everyone around us is doing the exact same thing - dealing with negative body image of themselves in some form.

When we do come across these pieces of validation we get lost in a moment of great excitement because FINALLY, "someone else has been here too! Look they designed this image, quoted this quote, wrote this article! I must share it right away and be as proud as they are of who I am and how I look!" Getting so wrapped up in the small moment of positive we are finally feeling about ourselves that we miss entirely the overall negative the message presents to those who are not like us. We do not realize what friends we may be hurting or what person struggling with their own body image issues might just be torn apart by the that same moment that offered us some glue.

It is a sad and sickening cycle how cruel we are, not only to ourselves, but also to others in regards to the size and shape our being is held within. Some of us are thin. Some of us are fat. Some of us sit in between. Yet all of us hate something about our body - some more than others.

We all strive to reach a point where we can sit comfortable in our own skin. Try and remember this the next time you find yourself wanting to label someone "fat" or "thin" - that person you are labeling is uncomfortable about their body too. Also try and remember that you see yourself in a light that is much worse than others, even those making fun. The next time you look in the mirror stop looking for the bad and strive to find one new thing about yourself that is good.

In fact, make that every time! Every time you look in the mirror stop looking for the bad and strive to find one new thing about yourself that is good. Eventually you may find, as most others do, the good outweighs the bad and you are beautiful no matter what shape or size your being is carried within.

Don't believe me? Watch this experiment.

"Women are their own worst beauty critics. Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. At Dove, we are committed to creating a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. So, we decided to conduct a compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see."

Brevity

Well, where have I been lately?

Vacation and a bit depressed.

Due to my current financial hardships I had to cancel my gym membership. Which I was miserable about for quite some time.

I took a week vacation however and managed to lose all sense of time. Which proved to be very beneficial as it allowed me a week of stress free reflection.

Now I am back and no longer sad about the loss of my gym membership! I have plenty of opportunities to workout and help train a few people this summer. So I will get my time in. Maybe this is just the motivation I need to start taking on more personal responsibility when it comes to learning about health and fitness.

In the meantime our Tigress Fitness Do Life challenge was a success! We started with five participants and ended with 3 completing the 11-week challenge. Between these 3 people 28 pounds was lost in total! WOW!

I created an award certificate for the person who had the most success - Jamie. She is truly an inspiration to us all. Her journey has added challenges due to some health issues and she just keeps pushing through everything and exceeding all of her goals. I'm thrilled to be able to follow along.

I begin the Couch to 5k program all over again starting next week. I'll be helping a couple of people train as well. This means the updates should start coming again as I find myself finally back on track!

A week for greatness!

Well this week was a downer for me. Getting up in the morning is not easy when you have a puppy that gets you up 2-4 times throughout the night. I only managed to get up in time to hit the morning workouts 3 times this week. She is getting better though, and the past couple of days I managed to ignore her a couple of times and get her to lay back down and sleep. I hope this will help her get use to staying quiet in the bedroom for the 6-8 hours I actually try and sleep!

We shall see.

This is Pants! She is a born runner!
Also conspiring against me meeting my fitness goals is the cold and dark. These two really lend in sapping any inspiration I have to run with Pants after work. However, the light is returning, so soon enough it won't be dark when I get home. That should help inspire me even with the cold. Cold and dark running on streets without sidewalks is not really my cup o' tea.

Neither are excuses for not running. Which I seem to have a ton of lately ... ugh.

I recognize that it is my responsibility to make the changes I want to make. To become familiar and customized with the habits I want to successfully add to my life. To choose health and wellness over depression and sickness. I have tasted the nectar of what feeling and being beautiful mean to me and I want to thrive on that honey again.

So starts week three of my version of the "Do Life" challenge.

This week I will push myself for greatness!!!

Here are this weeks motivational challenges:

1. Add one healthy thing to your overall health/diet/fitness that you never thought you would do and do it each day. Be that eat carrots, run intervals, lift weights, dance with your kids, meditate for 10 minutes, read a chapter from a book each day, etc...

2. Attempt to be able to perform one thing physically that I never though I could by the end of the week! Some examples could be: doing one full pull-up without assistance, walking/running a longer distance/time than ever before, doing more sit-ups/push-ups/mountain climbers/etc. in a minute at the end of the week than I could at the beginning, etc.

BONUS: Do the following workout video 2 times this week, plus work out for 20-40 minutes doing this video or something else you would prefer 2 more times this week, for a total of 4 days in which you workout for 20-40 minutes per day!

If you choose the video the substitutes for the high intensity level of each exercise is:

WARM-UP SECTION -

Side-Squats:
Instead of the hop just step to the left, do your best squat, stand up and step the right, do your best squat. Repeat.

Jog in Place: Do this at the intensity level you can maintain. Jog on and off, or walk in place if you cannot jog the entire time.

Knee-Ups: Do these without the jump to lower the intensity if needed.

Up & Out Jacks: Do these without the jump to lower the intensity if needed. Instead of jumping do toe taps in and out. Tap your left toe out, bring it in, tap your right toe out, bring it in, repeat.

Slow Butt Kickers & Arm Swings: There should be no need to modify this, if there is though leave the arms out.

Butt Kickers: If you need to modify, continue doing these without the jog/jump switch-up, just step in place instead.

Lateral Jumps: Rather than jump just step side to side. Slow the motion down to your comfort level.

CARDIO INTERVAL -

Burpee w/Leg Raise: When you do the burpee go slow, bend forward, place your hands flat, step back into push-up position, hold for a second, then bring your feet forward, raise yourself up and lift your legs as high as is comfortable to each side.

Flutterkick Squats: Again, just slow this down. Step forward and back slowly, then squat.

Double Butt Kickers: Do the single butt kickers at a jog/run or, if that intensity is still to intense, just do the single butt kickers with a gently rocking side-to-side step motion instead.

That should do it! The rest is up to you to take on!

Resolve!

Did not get out of bed in time to make it to the gym this morning. Did get out in time to make it to my living room though!

Today's living room workout:

In this workout I had to do a couple modified versions of the exercises:

Cross Crunch Getup - I did not do the opposite arm to opposite leg as I could not balance myself on a single arm. Instead I just crunched up, raised myself up, held and went back down.

Mountain Climbers - These are my nemesis. I had to take 15 second breaks rather than 10.

Butt Kickers - I attempted the double butt kickers but never did manage to get myself high enough to do them. (Someday though.) So I switched to single leg butt kickers instead.

I forgot to put on my heart rate monitor though, so I am not positive what my full calories worked is but I assume it was about 300. These interval training workouts are always more intense than you ever expect them to be. Next time I don't make it to the gym I will do two videos to get a full hour in!

For part of my new year resolutions I wanted to make it to the gym every weekday morning before work for at least an hour as well as run with the dog for 20-30 minutes every evening when I get home. I am setting myself up to not fail at this endeavor.

What do I mean by that? Simple. I am not starting off at that level - because I am not at that level yet.

Instead, I have focused on trying to accomplish these things each day as the day comes. I used Excel and made a tracking document for all of my resolutions. I broke it up by weeks, Monday through Sunday, so that if I manage a full week of success for my goals then I can reward myself in some form. Each day I mark down which of my goals I accomplished. Then, at the end of the week I can review what I did well and what I was not successful at. Allowing me to try something new the next week to try and reach my goals.

By the end of the year, my hope is, I should no longer need a tracking document as I will just do everything by habit!

I think the way I am approaching my resolutions this year helps guarantee success. I don't feel overwhelmed and yet I still feel accountable to reach my goals.

I hope you all are reaching yours!

Life Is Full of Surprises!

So, the triathlon came and went and I was not in it.

I realized about 2 weeks out that I might be able to physically do it, yet mentally I was just not focused nor prepared at all. In fact, my brain has been taxed lately. So much is going on in my personal life I am barely able to focus on one thing for more than an hour before I have to move onto the next.

This past week I really let things go. Family was in town visiting and they spoiled us with dinners out every night! I enjoyed having no commitment to the gym for the whole week! I went on a gluttonous rampage of enjoying everything and anything and being as lazy as I wanted.

Monday, I was back on track. In the gym, puffing my way through spin class. It felt sooooo incredibly good!

Tuesday I went to my exotic dance class and that is when it hit me. Ugh! I am working my way backwards here! The cute miniskirt I wanted to wear to class, the one that use to be too big for me, was skin tight and uncomfortable!

"No! What the hell are you doing to yourself?!?!"

I literally yelled out loud at myself.

Yes folks, I yelled at myself, in my empty apartment alone I looked in the mirror and yelled at myself. Then I grabbed my dancing shoes and said, "fuck this, I'm taking back control of myself!" As I walked out the door to dance class.

So, here I am now, committing on this 1st day of August to create a plan and stick with it! By September I will be at a place of happiness, were that skirt is too big for me again, and I am only yelling at myself in the mirror praises (or making silly faces)!

As well, I am trying to make time to write a requested post about how to plan for and eat healthy on a tight budget. I am sorry to say I just have not had the time. Yet, now that my focus is turning  back around to my health, well, I think it is time I made blogging and logging my successes a priority!

P.S. A reminder to myself ; "It is NOT the mountain that we conquer, it is OURSELVES!" HoooRAH!

Back - from a hiatus of sorts.

Priorities? What are those?
Life happens. Hell, more often than not life happens. For the past few months it seems to be happening all around me while I stand in the center trying to divide my attention appropriately.

Due to all this damned LIFE happening, my time to devote to my fitness has lessened. I still make it to the gym, yet it is only for about 5 hours a week rather than the regular (and healthier) 7-10 hours I had been devoted to. I find myself faltering between moments of feeling guilty and upset for not making fitness the same priority it was, to moments of "don't sweat it, this too shall pass and soon you will be back at it."

As well, my nutrition has fluctuated from being really good and well monitored to being so bad I try and ignore it! It is strange how eating healthier helped me to develop a sweet tooth. Seriously, prior to my discovery of how good unprocessed natural foods taste I never sought out sugary goodness. Now however, they are like ecstasy in my mouth!

Don't get me wrong, it is not candy and simple sweets that drive me. There can still be snickers bars and suckers in the house that will just get ignored. However, it is the homemade sweets that I am enjoying a little to much of. Having someone to cook for has brought back the experimenting baker in me. Cookies, pies, cakes and treats just get whipped up and devoured often. I need to find some healthier "treat" recipes to work with for my sweet intake - or more events to attend to rid myself of such temptations just lying around calling out to me.

For example this Dark Chocolate Ganache covered Guinness Stout cake!!!

The good news for all this subtle lax in my overall health focus -

TRIATHLON SEASON STARTS IN 2 WEEKS!!!!

2011 Girlfriends & Dudes Triathlon
Yep, that's right, as soon as I return from my May 4-5th vacation triathlon training begins and I will HAVE to be accountable for making the right choices daily. Any misstep I take could mean minutes lost in my triathlon finish and, since I am competing with myself to drop 10 minutes from last years time, every minute counts!

For the next three months my Saturday mornings will be spent swimming, biking and running with the triathlon training club! We will spend 2 hours learning, practicing and supporting each other in our endeavor to kill our bodies at the end of July and complete the Girlfriends and Dudes Sprint Triathlon in Vancouver, Washington.

Of course, the triathlon training also requires me to focus on my own personal training to develop each element of the tri so I can be better, fitter, faster and stronger! That means my gym time will increase - dedicatedly so. My current idea for my gym schedule is:

Monday - 2 Hours - Run to Gym, Cycle Class, Treadmill Intervals, Run Home
Tuesday - 3 Hours - Step n' Strength Class, Spin Class, Yoga
Wednesday - 1.5 Hours - Run to Gym, Weights, Run Home
Thursday - 2 Hours - Run to Gym, Definition Class, Treadmill Intervals, Run Home
Friday - 2.5 Hours - Run to Gym, Weights, Treadmill Intervals, Run Home
Saturday - 2 Hours - Triathlon Training Club

With all this said, I want to note I will be attempting to update my blog more regularly starting in May. As well, I am combining the FitTiggy blog into this one. This seems like the most logical idea, as my personal health journey should really be a part of who I am as a trainer. I still hold high hope to begin studying and get certified this Fall. We shall see on that one.

Crossing the Finish Line @ 2011 Girlfriends & Dudes Triathlon
The brief hiatus I have had has brought me up from the ultimate low I reached last year at 165 pounds to sitting at the very peak of my healthy weight range 174. Therefore, I have also decided to take some progressive pictures and use the triathlon training to mark my first steps back towards my ultimate goal of 155 pounds!

I look forward to sharing my journey with you all. As well, I look forward to updating this blog more regularly with advice that goes beyond just me personally and, I hope, can help you on your journey to become a healthier and happier you! A you that you never knew existed!!!!
